Manatee County is to adopt a "Jail Diversion Program" similar to the one available in Pinellas County.
Duncan McCormack, the Discharge Planner at the Pinellas County Jail, and manager of the program..."Keeps the mentally ill out of county jails, which are not equipped or staffed to treat such inmates, thereby easing jail overcrowding".
The program is a collaboration of the Public Defender, State Attorney, Pinellas County Sheriff, the judiciary and local service providers.

"Program gives purpose instead of prison" (St. Pete Times).
